Newhaven Open Call 2021

The 2021 Newhaven Open Call built on previous Open Calls and the programme of work that we do with local communities throughout the year. The event saw over 100 artists taking part.

The Newhaven Open Call differs from others because it is shows something by everyone who has submitted. In this sense, the exhibition mounts up to a democratic survey of art.

Boundaries between ‘professional’, ‘amateur’, ‘artist’ and ‘non-artist’ have been blurred by our impulse to overturn the imposed forms of classification and distinction. Additionally, we have found value in affording some art a level of visibility that it might not have attained otherwise.

Newhaven High Street has welcomed our project without hesitation or obvious judgement and we see this as an opportunity to help develop spaces for the community to work, think, experiment and contemplate.

As well as the exhibition in The Ship Hotel, there was a continuation of the show in an empty shop in Newhaven Square; ‘Bits and Pieces’. This repurposed space comprised work made by the Wellbeing Group that we have been lucky enough to work with throughout the Covid pandemic. Artist Ian Dawson was invited to lead the group in curating their own art alongside the Open Call and invited artists Alice Wilson, Nicky Hirst, Louisa Minkin, Alex Schady and Laura White. We thank all of these artists and Ian for their generosity and commitment to our project.

We would also like to thank Kerry, the manager of The Ship Hotel, and Mike Stimpson too. Without these two people we would have had nowhere to present this work.
